Bearing Much Fruit

Commentary on this week’s Gospel readings

Saul worked hard, but produced no more than bitter fruit.  Others sit around and look pious, but never produce a blasted thing.  What's the secret to bearing sweet abundant fruit instead of just foliage or sour grapes? Check out the commentary on this week’s Gospel readings by visiting: http://www.crossroadsinitiative.com/pics/Bearing_Much_Fruit_2009.pdf

May the Month of Mary

Paying Tribute to Mary the Mother of Jesus

Devotion to the Blessed Virgin is one of the cardinal features of not only professing to be, but of being a Catholic. Visit Devotion to Our Lady by Fr John Hardon S. J.:

http://www.catholiceducation.org/articles/printarticle.html?id=5997

“…Devotion to Our Lady is a sign that we are pleasing to God, because God, you would expect, loves those who love His Mother. That is why He gave her, entrusted her, to us and we to her. So that by doing the Will of her Son we may thus enjoy His presence in her company not only on earth but in eternity.”

Typical Polish Roadside Shrine in May

May is the month when Catholics traditionally focus on Mary, the Mother of Jesus. The practice dates back at least 700 years and is still observed in many countries around the world today. May is seen as the beginning of new life and the start of summer, which makes this a logical time for the celebrations of Mary, who brought life into the world.

May Devotions

This month of devotions in the church calendar is characterized by special hymns and the use of flowers, which bring nature into the church. There are several Marian feast days in May, including Our Lady of Fatima, Our Lady of the Most Blessed Sacrament and Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

The celebration of May as a holy month for Mary has been ratified by several popes through the ages. Pope Benedict XV ordered a prayer for peace in 1915 during World War I and Pope Pius XII called for May devotions in 1939, at the start of World War II.

Marian Shrines

Marian shrines also receive particular attention during this special month and, again, are decorated with flowers. Pilgrims sometimes undertake a journey to reach a particular shrine, praying the rosary along the way. The lady chapel of a church or cathedral is often also decorated with flowers during May. One Marian shrine noted for its Men’s pilgrimage on the last Sunday of every May is the Shrine in Piekary, Poland. Click on this link for some fascinating information on this very unique site: http://www.stagustinemp3.org/files/Piekary2.pdf

In some countries, such as Poland, in May, roadside shrines are decorated with flowers. In the evening, these shrines are visited by nearby residents who chant Marian devotional prayers and sing Marian hymns (Visit  Roadside Shrines and May Roadside Devotions.

The Pentecost Novena Starts May 22nd

"The Pentecost Novena is the first of all novenas, nine days of prayer. After Jesus’ Ascension into heaven, He commanded His disciples to come together in the upper room to devote themselves to constant prayer (Acts 1:14). They prayed for nine days before receiving the Holy Spirit on Pentecost."

Fr. John Corapi Delivers Video Message Regarding President Obama at Notre Dame University

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

As May 17 approaches, it is now almost certain that the University of Notre Dame will violate the Bishops' clear prohibition against honoring pro-abortion leaders at Catholic institutions - ignoring the pleas of nearly 70 Catholic bishops and more than 350,000 of you!

So what are we to do?  Right now, as Bishop Wenski, of Orlando said in his Mass of reparation, "I am not going to send upset Catholics to storm Notre Dame with pitchforks, I am going to tell them to pray." In that same spirit let us pray for the graduating seniors, Notre Dame and the renewal of faithful Catholic higher education in our country.

If you are near South Bend, graduates of Notre Dame who oppose the commencement honor have invited others to join them in adoration, Mass and prayer at Notre Dame's Campus.  For details please visit their website: NDResponse.com

With gratitude for your witness of the Catholic faith, Fr. John Corapi has taped the following message about what the scandal at Notre Dame means for our faith and the importance of not giving up the fight.

CLICK HERE for the Video Message from Fr. John Corapi

Please forward this to your friends and remember to pray for Notre Dame.  For ongoing updates or if you are unable to view the video in this message please go to NotreDameScandal.com

ADULT FAITH EDUCATION SERIES: THE GOD DELUSION and other errors in logic.

By Dr. Tim Lau

These ADULT FAITH EDUCATION lectures were given at St. Augustine Parish on Thursday February 5th, 12th & 19th: The series investigates the following questions: Is the belief in God a delusion?  Is religion the reason we go to war or the root of all evil? Does evolution exclude God?  Is God a ‘blind’ watchmaker?  Are we nothing more than cells in the service of some ’selfish’ genes? What does it mean to be human?
