Summary of this Issue

Much of this issue deals with the awarding of the Order of Canada to Henry Morgentaler. This came as a complete surprise to many. However there were rumours a few days earlier. The outrage to this award is quite general and crosses religious lines. Links to many pertinent articles and suggestions for action are provided.

It is important to pray for the conversion of Henry Morgentaler as well as other enemies of the Church. Sarah Wilson offers a suggestion of a Novena towards this intention

The stark reality is that many approve of this award to Henry Morgentaler. Comments to a CBC article provide ample evidence of this as well as an opportunity to evangelize these individuals

Excellent article by Stephanie Gray on the Morgentaler Debate.

On Wednesday July 9th there will be a demonstration in front of Rideau Hall to protest and to seek the revocation of the Morgentaler award.

The Eucharistic Congress took place only a few weeks ago. Links are available to help you profit from the many teachings given during this momentous week, and to relive some of the excitement.

You may have heard that as of this June, we are in the Year of St. Paul. A Web site dedicated to this Year as well as an article by Archbishop Prendergast is provided.

Awarding of the Order of Canada to Henry Morgentaler

Rumours of the pending nomination first started to surface the morning of Saturday June 28th . Suddenly, what was supposed to be a quiet Canada Day weekend was transformed into a whirlwind of feverish activity for many. Andrea Mrozek (http://www.prowomanprolife.org/) cancelled her vacation plans for the weekend. John Pacheco (http://www.socon.ca/or_bust/) provided his usual incisive comments on the fluid situation. The (http://www.4mycanada.ca/) site mobilized a demonstration on Parliament Hill in an effort to influence the Governor General.

Then early in the afternoon of Canada Day, the announcement was made. At first, this had an understandably depressing effect on those who saw this coming and were struggling to try and prevent it. However, within hours reactions of outrage sprang from many (and not just Catholic and Pro-life) quarters.

Suddenly, the abortion debate which many thought was long settled came to the forefront....as a priest once said in his homily “man proposes but God disposes”.

Maureen Ward has done a remarkable job collating many of the pertinent news articles associated with this event and placed them on the Annunciation of the Lord Web site:

It is important that everyone keep the pressure on so that this award is revoked. By awarding the Order of Canada to Morgentaler is tantamount to calling abortion a virtue. In other words, what hitherto was considered evil can now be considered as good. Do we want that type of Canada for us and our kids? What blessings does a country deserve that allows this to happen?

Here’s what one do?

  • Express your opinion. If you haven’t done so yet, contact the people who made this decision and express your opinion. Maureen Ward made up a good list (Click HERE). A more extensive list can be found at: http://www.4mycanada.ca/Emails/20080703.html
  • Pray above else. As mentioned above “man proposes but God disposes”. Nothing is more important than the Mass.
  • Pray for the conversion of Henry Morgentaler (see below)

Prayer for the Conversion of Henry Morgentaler

Dear friends,
As most of you have probably heard already, Henry Morgentaler, Canada's leading abortionist, is receiving the Order of Canada. This event is a good reminder that Morgentaler desperately needs our prayers, a need that is all the more urgent because he is very ill. He has terminal cancer; he has been given two weeks to live.

We (the youth of CLC) are starting a novena to St. Joseph petitioning for the conversion of Henry Morgentaler and all other supporters of the culture of death. A novena involves praying for nine consecutive days for the same intention through the intercession of a particular saint. Novenas are incredibly powerful, and St. Joseph, being so close to Mary and Jesus, is a particularly powerful saint. This novena was also chosen because Saint Joseph is the patron saint of Canada, and the patron saint of a happy death.

Please join us in saying a simple prayer each day for nine days. Also, pass this on to any friends, family, or fellow pro-lifers who might be interested. We plan on starting the novena on Friday (July 4) and it would be great if everyone could say it together. However, if you don't get this email until later don't hesitate to say it on your own.
Every prayer counts! Thank you!

For Life,
Sarah Wilson

Prayer to Obtain a Conversion

O glorious patriarch St. Joseph, who merited to be called “just” by the Holy Ghost, I urgently recommend to the soul of Henry Morgentaler, which Jesus redeemed at the price of His Precious Blood. Thou knowest how deplorable is the state and how unhappy the life of those who have banished this loving Saviour from their hearts, and how greatly they are exposed to the danger of losing Him eternally. Permit not, I beseech thee, that a soul so dear to me should continue any longer in its evil ways; preserve it from the danger that threatens it; touch the heart of the prodigal child and conduct him back to the bosom of the fondest of fathers. Abandon him not, I implore thee, till thou hast opened to him the gates of the Heavenly city, where he will praise and bless thee throughout eternity for the happiness which he will owe to thy powerful intercession. Amen.

Pray 1 Our Father, 1 Hail Mary, 1 Glory Be

"Any country that accepts abortion is not teaching its people to love,
but to use violence to get what they want. That is why the greatest
destroyer of love and peace is abortion."

Many are happy with the Morgentaler award

The unfortunate reality is that many are happy with the Morgentaler OC award. Look at the hundreds comments following this CBC article:
http://www.cbc.ca/canada/story/2008/07/03/priest-order-canada.html

You will notice that a common thread in many of these comments is to vilify the Catholic Church, and in some cases in a particularly untruthful and vicious manner. This seems odd since Catholics are not the only ones objecting to the Morgentaler nomination. Other Christian denominations, other faiths and even non believers are doing so as well. So why pick on the Catholics?

It should be pointed out that this is a common tactic of the pro-abortion movement which is “to play the Catholic card”. Bernard Nathanson, a former abortionist documented this strategy in: http://www.catholiceducation.org/articles/abortion/ab0005.html

“The Second Key Tactic was to Play the Catholic Card”

We systematically vilified the Catholic Church and its “socially backward ideas” and picked on the Catholic hierarchy as the villain in opposing abortion. This theme was played endlessly. We fed the media such lies as “we all know that opposition to abortion comes from the hierarchy and not from most Catholics” and “Polls prove time and again that most Catholics want abortion law reform.” And the media drum-fired all this into the American people, persuading them that anyone opposing permissive abortion must be under the influence of the Catholic hierarchy and that Catholics in favour of abortion are enlightened and forward-looking. An inference of this tactic was that there were no non-Catholic groups opposing abortion. The fact that other Christian as well as non-Christian religions were (and still are) monolithically opposed to abortion was constantly suppressed, along with pro-life atheists’ opinions.”

One must pray for those attacking the Church in this manner. BTW, the CBC article provides an excellent forum to do some serious evangelization by providing your own pertinent comments in rebuttal.

James 1:17 Excellent Stephanie Gray article on the Morgentaler debate entitled: “Do we have the right to do what is wrong?”

Here's an excellent article on the CBC website that I think describes the very basis of the issue very well. It is informative and very well composed. Thank God for it.

One of the many good points Stephanie brings forward is one I heard from another good speaker on this topic - that a good thing about him getting this honor is that it opens up the issue again. I guess God will not let such important issues just get swept under the rug and forgotten about.

God Bless!

The Eucharistic Congress which took place the week of June 15 to 22nd in Quebec City was truly a momentous and grace-filled. Many were deeply affected particularly the young participants. Cardinal Marc Ouellet believes that “we have reached a turning point in the history of the Catholic Church in Quebec”.

Pope Benedict XVI decreed June 2008 to June 2009 to be "The Year of St. Paul" commemorating the 2,000th anniversary of the Saint's birth. Inspired by the Spirit of St. Paul and the Pope's declaration, friends of St. Paul established THIS WEBSITE for the purpose of facilitating and assisting communications among the many other friends of St. Paul to honour him and his teachings.

To help celebrate the Year of St. Paul, THE CATHOLIC REGISTER will include a series of monthly articles by our Archbishop Most Rev. Terrence Prendergast, himself a noted Scripture scholar and writer. Click HERE for the 1st article.

The Cry Canada: Pro-life/ Pro-family Event August 23rd

August 23rd Christians from a multitude of backgrounds from across the country, will come together in the nation's capital for a full day of fasting and prayer for our nation. The bulk of those in attendance will be young adults who have a passion to see Christian morality restored in our nation. This will be the 3rd such rally since 2002 and the average attendance has been around 10,000, including a large number of Catholics.

We were honoured to have Catholic worship leader and artist, Janelle Reinhart with us for the gathering in 2006 and were very blessed by her contribution. We are very excited to let you know that this year we will also have Catholic worship leader David MacDonald with us for a segment of the day.

You can read much more about the event on our website (www.thecry.ca). This year, in honour of the 400th anniversary of Quebec City we have decided to do most of the activities across the river in Jacques Cartier Park, though part of the day will feature a prayer walk across the interprovincial bridge and a segment in front of the Peace Tower on Parliament Hill.

Yours in Christ's service and on behalf of “TheCRY” Board of Trustees and
Leadership Team,
