OC award continues. Petition forms are available for downloading
for Parish use. A Web site was found allowing one to give feedback
to the Governor General.

our last issue, numerous articles related to the 40th anniversary
of the encyclical Humanae Vitae have continued to pour in. Links
to some of the more recent ones are provided.
Two

Some
disturbing news regarding an agenda which MacDonald Restaurants
actively support.
Alexandr
Solzhenitsyn, the Russian Prophet passed away recently. Although
most of his work dealt with life in the Soviet
Union,
he did have some very pertinent insights about our Western “Civilization”
which he shared in an address given at Harvard in 1978.
World
Youth Day 2008. Now, after a week of joyful, unashamed religious
sentiment Down Under, everyone knows that there is a viable
alternative. God is back in the game. Links to articles, blogs,
homily texts and videos of WYD08 are provided. It is evident
that a powerful evangelizing spirit prevailed during that week.
If you are just returning from Australia or summer
vacation and missed our WYD broadcast, don’t worry. Salt
+ Light TV will re-broadcast the entire event starting Aug
12th.
Major
upcoming events of note the rest of this Summer:
- On Monday August 11th there
will be an exposition of sacred relics of the saints this
time at St. Maurice Parish. This is the last time such an
exposition will be available in Ottawa for the foreseeable future,
so don’t miss this unique opportunity to deepen your faith.
- On Saturday August 23rd “The
Cry” takes place in Ottawa: a movement of young
people that petitions heaven for His mercy and favour on Canada
- August 30th to September 1st:

40th
Anniversary of Humanae Vitae
A
plethora of articles which appeared has appeared in the last
few weeks to commemorate the 40th Anniversary of
this landmark encyclical. Can this be explained as the workings
of the Holy Spirit saying “forty years of silence is enough”?
Below are some to the more recent articles. The last link allows
one to view a more extensive list of recently published articles.
- Fr.
Walter Schu LC
analyses why HV stirred up such a firestorm of dissent,
and how this dissent is still present in the Catholic Church
albeit in a “silent” fashion....This silence must be broken!

- Christopher
West
shows how the prophetic teaching of Humanae
Vitae can lead to man’s true peace and happiness...
the only path to authentic sexual freedom: the freedom to
love. Read “Humanae Vitae and True Sexual Freedom”:

Aleksandr Isayevich Solzhenitsyn (1918-2008)

A Gulag Search
Alexandr Solzhenitsyn was one of the last century’s greatest
thinkers and writers. During his Nobel Prise acceptance speech,
he said: “One word of truth shall outweigh the whole world
Read: “A Russian Prophet”: http://www.mercatornet.com/articles/a_russian_prophet/
Although much of his work dealt with exposing the evils of Communism,
Solzhenitsyn also spent some time in the U.S. (after being
exiled from the Soviet Union). In an address delivered at Harvard University in 1978,
he had some words of wisdom directed towards our Western society.
Starting with Harvard’s motto, Veritas
(truth), he hammered an establishment which had strayed from
the pursuit of truth and had liberated itself from God.
Solzhenitsyn discussed how much Communism and Western society
have in common in that they both “proclaimed and enforced autonomy
of man from any higher force above him. It could also be called
anthropocentricity, with man seen as the center of everything
that exists”. Both systems have as their source the now “ossified
formulas of the Enlightenment”.
It should be noted that in 1978, abortion and homosexual activity
were not promoted with pride as they are today. Hence the moral
decay in the West was evident to Solzhenitsyn even back then.

Exposition
of Sacred Relics of the Saints Monday August 11th
On Monday August 11th, at 7:00 p.m. at
St. Maurice Parish there will be an exposition of sacred
relics some of which are 2000 years old. The exposition starts
off with a presentation explaining the history of relics in the
Church, the different types of relics, how they are authenticated,
and shows images of the “incorruptibles”, or saints whose remains
have remained in tact well after their death. Besides being informative,
the session is also a very reverent and joyful occasion.
Relics have been venerated by Catholics since
the earliest times. This is the last opportunity to view this
extensive collection of Church relics in the Ottawa area as they
will be moving along with their custodian to Texas.

The Cry Canada: Pro-life/ Pro-family
Event August 23rd

August 23rd Christians from a multitude
of backgrounds from across the country, will come together in
the nation's capital for a full day of fasting and prayer for
our nation. The bulk of those in attendance will be young adults
who have a passion to see Christian morality restored in our nation.
This will be the 3rd such rally since 2002 and the average attendance
has been around 10,000, including a large number of Catholics.
We were honoured to have Catholic worship leader and artist, Janelle
Reinhart with us for the gathering in 2006 and were very blessed
by her contribution. We are very excited to let you know that
this year we will also have Catholic worship leader David MacDonald
with us for a segment of the day.
You can read much more about the event on our website (www.thecry.ca).
This year, in honour of the 400th anniversary of Quebec City we
have decided to do most of the activities across the river in
Jacques Cartier Park, though part of the day will feature a prayer
walk across the interprovincial bridge and a segment in front
of the Peace Tower on Parliament Hill. |
