Dan’s Keyboard: A little misnomer this week. Dan doesn’t type a message, but does want to share this message …

Please see Graham's Corner for information on an Action Life public information meeting on the growing threat of euthanasia, featuring guest speaker Bobby Schindler, brother of the late Terri Schiavo. The meeting will be held on Thursday October 26 at 7 pm at St. Paul University, Room 1124.

Tim's Tidbits: contains “The Pen, the Sword and the Pontiff”, and do you remember Mr T.?

Lighterside: From one pumpkin to another, comes from Julie Foran. The Five Finger Prayer came in twice, once in words only and then Cindy sent in a version that contained pictures. This had appeared before a couple of years ago as well. Ginette Charron says, “Well really the Lord does the work ... and sends along the story of a whale.

Christmas stamps from Canada Post
As you may know, a movement addressed at Canada Post was launched a number of years ago to abolish Christian Christmas postage stamps on the premise that Canada is a secular society and no one denomination should be favoured over the others.

However, Christmas is a Christian holiday. Other denominations in Canada are not discriminated against; they too have the freedom of manifesting their beliefs publicly and of celebrating their religious holidays.

Last year, Canada Post printed stamps with a nativity scene. These were sold out the first week of November. I called Canada Post to complain and spoke to a very sympathetic person who said a limited number had been printed because they thought there would be little demand. They didn't want to end up with a surplus because people tend not to use thematic stamps out of season.

I have found Canada Post information stating that, this year, 51-cent Christmas stamps of the Madonna and Child (reproduced from a painting by a Québécois painter) will be available at post offices as of November 1. To maintain Christian visibility in our secular society I encourage you to use Christian Christmas stamps and to buy them early.

Democracy is not enshrined in the Canadian Constitution; it is a tradition. The only way of maintaining our democratic rights is to exercise them.

Peace, Louise Lalonde

Greetings!

Many of our Houston supporters turned out for a wonderful 10th anniversary of ordination banquet for Fr. Christian Riesbeck on Sept. 30th. It was a memorable evening, full of laughter and thanksgiving. If you would like to view some photos of this event, please visit our online PictureTrail Photo
Album at http://www.PictureTrail.com/gid13258148.

On Oct. 13th the CCs celebrated their annual 'Ministries Mass' in Ottawa. At this Mass several of our CC seminarians received either the ministry of Lector or Acolyte. This occasion marks an important step in a seminarian's journey of formation. Photos can be viewed at

God Bless - Fr. John Vandenakker

Hello everyone,

On Tuesday Oct. 24, 2006, social conservative leaders from across Canada will be meeting on Parliament Hill at the National Marriage Caucus.

As part of this event, there will be a Prayer gathering from 3:30pm to 4:30pm on the steps of Parliament Hill to pray for Canada and the institution of marriage in this country. It's called "Marriage Vigil 1000" in the hopes of attracting 1000 people to it.

More details of the event can be accessed here:

http://www.canadianvalues.ca/events.aspx?aid=232

If you cannot attend the vigil, St. Maurice Catholic Church (4 Perry Street, Nepean) will be holding Eucharistic Adoration from 10AM-6PM. The purpose of this particular adoration will be to seek the intercession of the Holy Archangels and St. Raphael, in particular for their intercession for our country, our matrimonial heritage, and the successful deliberations of the National Caucus on Marriage meeting. The date of this meeting and prayer vigil is particularly important because, before the reform of the General Roman Calendar, the feast of St. Raphael, fell on October 24 and St. Raphael just so happens to also be the patron saint of marriages and meetings!

Hopefully all concerned Catholics will make a genuine effort to either attend the vigil on Parliament Hill or Eucharistic Adoration at St. Maurice. Please pass this message on to other Catholics and groups you may belong to.

God bless you, Heidi
