HE IS RISEN! TRULY HE IS RISEN
AS HE SAID HE WOULD

I decided to leave Bruce’s instructions below. I saw some movie critics have already seen the sneak preview and it is a BOMB! I’m taking the grandkids to see the movie Over the Hedge. What will you do?

Kim Hanekom has a message below, which reminds me to ask you. Do you remember when you last visited our version of testimonials? On this page, you will be able to see some thank you to the VM family! http://virtualministry.com/contrib_pages/Testimonials.htm

Please see Graham's Corner for a link to the website of Fr. Raniero Cantalamessa, preacher to the papal household, which provides access to the text of his homilies and talks. Also for information on upcoming EWTN programs, including details of EWTN's coverage of Pope Benedict's 4 day visit to Poland from May 25 to 28.

Go to Dan’s Keyboard, to see “Approved Prayer for Pope John Paul II’s intercession”

Lighterside is about to go thru a change. On the heading of the page it says VM LighterSide (Jokes and Inspirational Stories). We will soon have one page for the “jokes”. We will have a separate page for the “inspirational stories”. This week we share one inspirational story that was sent to us by Jack Egan.

Do you live in the Archdiocese of Ottawa? If so, how is your Archbishop? Is he getting close to retiring? When might that happen? Are you praying for his imminent replacement? Should you be?
PLEASE PRAY for archbishop Gervais, his decision, and then his replacement. Let’s all pray that God’s will be done and that Mother Mary’s right bishop will shepherd us here!

Did you read about the Boulianne house for sale? / Did you see Jamie Lepper’s open letter? / Did you read Laura Kelly’s plea? / Are you praying for Fr Heffernan? … Last week’s VM340 was posted late – so if you missed it remember to go to our archives page to see it, and any other past issues. http://virtualministry.com/Archives/VMArchive2006/VM340/VM340.htm

John Pacheco Place is a MUST SEE this week!

Speaking about our other pages – when were you last at our prayer request page? We add Marjorie’s request today.

Kim Hanekom

I was wondering if you would be so kind as to post my message on Virtual Ministry. My friend, a practicing Catholic mom, had to leave a bad situation and move into Nepean Housing recently with her two small daughters ages 15 months and five years.

I asked her to send me her "wish" list of items she might need/want. They are: phone, radio, mirror(s), clock, book shelf, pantry-type cupboard, microwave, office chair, small table (suitable for crafts), dresser, lamp(s), curtains, assistance putting curtains up, outdoor baby swing, bed frames: single, double and queen (have mattresses), bed side table, summer clothes for oldest daughter (size 8-10)

If anyone has an item or two listed above that they don't need anymore and would like to pass it along to this family, please contact me, Kim Hanekom by e-mail at Kim.Hanekom@gmail.com. I am a parishioner of St. Mary's Parish in Ottawa and have been for about eight years now.

Thanks in advance and God bless you.

Editor’s note: Thank you Kim for once again answering HIS call, and OF COURSE this is to be posted in VM. FOLKS! Come on and let’s be CHURCH. Remember to visit our http://virtualministry.com/contrib_pages/Testimonials.htm page to read of past successes, and let's overwhelm this friend of Kim’s.

Fr. John Vandenakker

Greetings.

The Companions of the Cross met in a special Assembly during the first week of May out at Bearbrook Farm east of Ottawa. Many aspects of the community's vision, ministry, and life together were discussed at this important gathering. A full report will appear in our Summer Newsletter. The Assembly concluded with the election of a new CC Moderator and Executive Council.

Congratulations go out to Fr. Scott McCaig, who takes over the duties of Moderator, from Fr. Roger Vandenakker. His new Council is comprised of: Fr. Rick Jaworski, Fr. Christian Riesbeck, Fr. Francis Donnelly, and Fr. Pierre Ingram. Fr. Scott and his new Council were formally introduced at the CC's Annual Foundation Day Mass, which was held at St. Mary's Church in Ottawa on Fri. May 5th.

If you would like to view some photos of these events, please visit our online PictureTrail photo album located at: http://www.PictureTrail.com/gid10096813 (2006 Assembly). Many thanks to all of you who prayed and interceded for the Companions during this Assembly. The Holy Spirit was truly at work!

Peace - Fr. John Vandenakker

(Sorry for the delay in getting this announcement out to all of you - I have just returned from a wonderful pilgrimage to Prague & Poland)

Rock the box office! (Fri 19th to Sun 21st May)

Instead of expressing disapproval at blasphemy by protesting and boycotting, (and thereby falling into the trap of creating free front page hype and lead story controversy for Sony Pictures to sell more tickets) some Christians who know how Hollywood works have a different suggestion. What reads below came by way of Barbara Nicolosi at Act One, an organization for Christians in Hollywood.

pass this on!

WHAT ARE WE DOING MAY 19TH?

May 19th is the date the Da Vinci Code movie opens. A movie based on a book that wears its heresy and blasphemy as a badge of honour.

What can we as Christians do in response to the release of this movie? I'm going to offer you the usual choices -- and a new one.

Here are the usual suspects:

we can ignore the film...

The problem with this option: The box office is a ballot box. The only people whose votes are counted are those who buy tickets. And the ballot box closes on the Sunday of opening weekend. If you stay home, you have lost your chance to make your vote heard. You have thrown your vote away, and from Hollywood's point of view, you don't count. By staying home, you do nothing to shape the decision-making process regarding what movies will make it to the big screen.

Or we can protest...

The problem with this option: It doesn't work. Any publicity is good publicity. Protests not only fuel the box office, they make all Christians look like idiots. And again, protests and boycotts do nothing to help shape the decisions being made right now about what movies Hollywood will make in the next few years. (Or they convince Hollywood to make *more* movies that will provoke Christians to protest, which will drive the box office up.)

Or we can discuss the film. We can be rational and be ready with study guides and workshops and point-by-point refutations of the lies promulgated by the film. ...

The problem with this option: No one's listening. They think they know what we're going to say already. We'll lose most of these discussions anyway, no matter how prepared we are, because the power of story always trumps the power of facts (why do you think Jesus taught in parables?!). And once again: rational discussion of history does nothing to affect Hollywood's choices regarding what movies to make.

But there's a fourth choice.

On May 19th...
Just go to another film!

Save the date now. May 19th, or May 20th. No later than Sunday, May 21st -- that's the day the ballot box closes. We'll get a vote, the only vote Hollywood recognizes: The power of cold hard cash laid down on a box office window on opening weekend.

Use your vote. Don't throw it away. Vote for a movie other than DVC. If enough people do it, the powers that be will notice. They won't have a choice.

The major studio movie scheduled for release against DVC is the DreamWorks animated feature Over the Hedge. The trailers look fun, and you can take kids. And your friends! And their friends! In fact, let's all go see it.

Let's rock the box office in a way no one expects -- without protests, without boycotts, without arguments, without rancour. Let's show up at the box office ballot box and cast our votes. And buy some popcorn, too.

May 19th. Mark your calendars now: Over the Hedge's opening weekend. Buy a ticket.

And spread the word. Forward this e-mail to all the Christians in your address book. Post it on your blogs. Talk about it to your churches. And let's all go to the movies.

Birthdays and Anniversaries

Birthdays coming up this week are:
May 21 - Doug McColeman changes decade ... its true, Doug will turn 30, on Sunday.

Therefore I will use this space to apologize to Becky Barlow. May 5 will get you top billing NEXT YEAR!

Do you know of one that should have been announced here?

What was going on in VM – one year ago?
