Karol: The Man Who Became Pope - a telemovie about Pope John Paul II's early life - has been given its premiere in Vatican City. The first part will show on CBC Sunday, May 15, 2005, 8:00 p.m. This is a two-part, four-hour mini-series.

Part 1- BBC News reports that the film dramatizes the life of Karol Wojtyla from when he was a young man in Poland until becoming pontiff. It was in production for months before the Holy Father died on 2 April. He is played by Polish actor Piotr Adamczyk. "We were trying not to copy Karol Wojtyla," Adamczyk said. "Not to copy his gestures, his voice - but to give symbols to try to touch the fragments of his great personality."

Last year, Pope John Paul II told Adamczyk: "You're crazy to make a film about me. What did I ever do?"

The movie, which had a budget of 11m euros (£7.5m), begins with Germany's invasion of Poland in September 1939. The future Pope was forced into hiding several years later following a crackdown on religious teaching.

In a recreation of the 1978 conclave that elected him Pope, one scene shows him as a cardinal, in tears as the votes are counted.

The film was shown at the Lateran Pontifical University on Thursday and film-makers said they had no objections from the Vatican despite embellishing some parts of the story for the dramatization.

The film features an international cast, including Matt Craven as Nazi General Hans Frank, Kenneth Welsh as Professor Wojcik, Raul Bova as Father Tomasz Zaleski, Malgorzata Bela as Hania, Ennio Fantastichini as Nowak, Ken Duken as Adam Violante Placido as Maria.

Good news from the election front....

Wanted to pass along this bit of good news from the one-step-closer-to-being-honorable (member-that-is) department:

Pierre Lemieux has won the Conservative Party nomination in Glengarry-Prescott-Russell! Please keep Pierre in your prayers as this is only the first victory in a long battle.

To Pierre ... Bravo Zulu (that's a military-speak for "well done").

REMINDER

For those of you interested in sending submissions to Virtual Ministry for
inclusion in an upcoming issue, I ask that you have them to me by
Wednesday morning each week. I know that is early, but Todd and I are
working to have VM ready for reading by Friday morning. That way the work
does not eat into our weekends.

Please think about your audience before sending submissions. They should
be of particular interest to the Ottawa Catholic/Christian community,
faithful to the Magisterium of the Roman Catholic Church and in good
taste. If you wish to send a long document that you have obtained
elsewhere on the internet, please provide the link, as there is not space
to include pages and pages of text from one source. Please do not be
offended if your submission is not included. It may be that it isn't
suitable or that the issue was just getting too big. I will only reply to
emails that request it, as there can be a lot of emails in any given week.

If you are sending a forwarded email, please cut and paste for ease of
editing.

Please send your submissions to VMsubmissions@virtualministry.com

God bless!   Sue (Proverbs 31:30)
