Family -  Integrity - Accountability

1. Family Values:

·         Marriage: The fundamental cornerstone of our society is the union of one man and one woman in marriage.  It provides the best stability for children in their spiritual and emotional development, and ensures a strong and well balanced workforce which helps build up society instead of being a drain on it. It is a necessary foundation for a prosperous nation, and it makes good business sense. Marriage is the best social program going, and it is neither invented by government, nor can it be redefined by it.

·         Lower Taxation of Families:  The current federal tax system discriminates against families as it effectively forces two parents to work in order to make ends meet.  As it currently stands, a single income earner making the same amount as a two-income family is taxed significantly more.   It is time to allow families the choice of how to raise their children by lowering taxes to make it possible for one parent to stay home. Punitive taxation against families must end.

·         Respect for Elderly:  Respect for human dignity includes respecting and honouring the hard work and sacrifices senior citizens have made to Canada. This includes enabling seniors to maintain their independence to stay in their own homes instead of institutionalized care. It also includes protecting CPP and Old Age Security from being used by government for purposes other than pension purposes.

2. Accountability:

·         Ministerial Responsibility: Demand a greater accountability from Ministers for the resources under their stewardship.

·         Auditor General: Provide an expanded role and responsibility of the auditor general to ensure politicians are held accountable to the electorate.

·         Free Votes:  Support free votes on matters of deep personal conviction, and not be forced to tow the Party line on moral issues.

·         Supreme Court Nominees: Ratified by Parliament in order to check the powers of unelected judges who are unaccountable to the people.

3.     Fiscal Matters

·         Balanced Budget:  No country should live beyond its means.  Running deficits only contributes to the decline of a nation and puts an unnecessary burden on our children.  Debt repayment should also be a top fiscal priority.

·         Lower Taxes: Introduce immediate and broad based tax relief to individuals, families, and businesses.  Conservatives believe that a buck in your hand is better than one in Paul Martin’s.

·         Corporate Welfare: It’s time to work responsibly towards ending subsidies for for-profit business in exchange for lower corporate taxes. Ultimately, subsidies foster inefficiency and waste which harms our nation’s competitiveness.

4. Property Rights:

It is time that each citizen be guaranteed the right to property which they currently do not have under the Constitution.  All landowners are entitled to a full, just, and timely compensation for any land or other private property conceded to the State.  The Federal government should also work to ensure that provincial governments respect this principle.

5. Health Care:

·         Maintain access to timely, universal and quality health care services.

·         Open up the delivery of health care services to private companies, while maintaining the public system.

·         Encourage research and study into allowing some private medical care without sacrificing the quality of the public health care system.

·         Protect the long term viability of health care through financial and tax incentives for larger families, thereby increasing the tax base of a youthful workforce and funding health care costs for an older generation.

6. Crime:

·         Increase in violent crime, sexual offenses,  and other crimes is ultimately a consequence of family breakdown and disintegration.  It is also a result of a failure to recognize the role and purpose of sex within marriage. Without proper role models and parental instruction, criminal activity increases accordingly.  So while a good social program might be a job, the best social program to alleviate society’s problems remains a strong family unit.  Fix the family and we will fix many of our social and financial problems.

·         As a transitionary measure, however, society needs to be protected from dangerous offenders who should not be released from incarceration until they are no longer a threat to society.  Furthermore, because of the epidemic of sexual abuse in Canada, a Conservative government will require the registration of all dangerous sex offenders.

·         Because politicians are placed in a position of public trust over their constituents hard earned tax dollars, additional and significant penalties and fines should be levied against any politician who uses their position to profit illegally from their position.

7. National Defense:

Canada has always been known as one of the world’s premier peace keepers. But over the past decade of Liberal rule, our reputation has suffered badly as cuts to defense spending and an unwillingness to meet our international commitment has made Canada an embarrassment.  In order to fulfill our commitments around the world, we must first be able to defend ourselves, and therefore we must commit to providing the necessary funding to our military.  Over the past decade our ability to defend ourselves has been seriously eroded which has resulted in a real threat to our sovereignty and an easy target for terrorists.  A Conservative government will rectify this deplorable situation.  Canada should not expect the U.S. to defend our country, and therefore Canada should not be seen as a freeloader on the world stage.
