Dear
Friends,
There is a scene in Lord of the Rings which has always had a deep impact on me. The scene, you might recall, has two hobbits, Merry and Pippen, awaiting the answer from the Ents on whether or not they will enter the War against Saruman and Sauron, the evil forces of darkness in Middle earth. After they learn that the Ents have decided not to enter the war (later the Ents would change their minds), Pippin turns to Merry and confesses that perhaps it was now time to return to the Shire, and resign themselves to the fact that this was not their
war.
"After
all, Merry, who are we? We're just hobbits. This war is not for us.
Let's just go back to the Shire."
Merry
then solemnly turns to Pippin and says: "What are we going back to,
Pippin? There will be no Shire unless we fight."
This
scene profoundly speaks to us in this hour of our nation's history. At
this critical moment in our history when our country is on the brink of moral
collapse, all of us are faced with the central question that faced these two
hobbits:
Shall
we fight or shall we retreat?
And
the answer that the one hobbit gave to the other is no less relevant for us.
If we retreat into our ghettos and buy some cheap time, what will become of us
when the forces of darkness overpower us and come into our schools, our
churches, and even our homes? Will we lie to ourselves today and say it
won't impact us because we fear the fight and the sacrifices that come with it?
And what will be left for our children and their posterity? What will
become of their freedoms? Of their divine right to practice their
Christian faith?
The
forces of evil will not relent, nor will they seek nothing less than our total
submission. So we have a decision to make. Will we fight? Or
will we simply deceive ourselves into thinking that there are more important
things to do when the battle is upon us? “We did not seek war”,
Gandalf told Frodo, “war was declared on us, and now we must respond.”
Well,
the battle is here. And it is no less significant for our country than it
was for the Hobbits of Middle Earth.
Please.
For God's Sake and the sake of our children. Show up. And be
counted.

to do the same.

The
day of the hobbit has now arrived.
