Fascinating story  / This one is interesting!

A Very Bizarre Death

Not even Law and Order would attempt to capture this mess...This is an unbelievable twist of fate!!!    At the 1994 annual awards dinner given for Forensic Science, AAFS President Dr. Don Harper Mills astounded his audience with the legal complications of a bizarre death. Here is the story:

On March 23, 1994 the medical examiner viewed the body of Ronald Opus and concluded that he died from a shotgun wound to the head.  Mr. Opus had jumped from the top of a ten-story building intending to commit suicide.  He left a note to the effect indicating his despondency.

As he fell past the ninth floor his life was interrupted by a shotgun blast passing through a window, which killed him instantly.

Neither the shooter nor the deceased was aware that a safety net had been installed just below the eighth floor level to protect some building workers and that Ronald Opus would not have been able to complete his suicide the way he had planned.

"Ordinarily," Dr Mills continued, "Someone who sets out to commit suicide and ultimately succeeds, even though the mechanism might not be what he intended, is still defined as committing suicide."  That Mr. Opus was shot on the way to certain death, but probably would not have been successful because of  the safety net, caused the medical examiner to feel that he had a homicide on his hands.

In the room on the ninth floor, where the shotgun blast emanated, was occupied by an elderly man and his wife. They were arguing vigorously and he was threatening her with a shotgun.  The man was so upset that when he pulled the trigger he completely missed his wife and the pellets went through the window striking Mr. Opus.

When one intends to kill subject "A" but kills subject "B" in the attempt, one is guilty of the murder of subject "B."

When confronted with the murder charge the old man and his wife were both adamant and both said that they thought the shotgun was not loaded.  The old man said it was a long-standing habit to threaten his wife with the unloaded shotgun. He had no intention to murder her.  Therefore the killing of Mr. Opus appeared to be an accident; that is, assuming the gun had been accidentally loaded.

The continuing investigation turned up a witness who saw the old couple's son loading the shotgun about six weeks prior to the fatal accident.  It transpired that the old lady had cut off her son's financial support and the son, knowing the propensity of his father to use the shotgun threateningly, loaded the gun with the expectation that his father would shoot his mother.

Since the loader of the gun was aware of this, he was guilty of the murder even though he didn't actually pull the trigger.  The case now becomes one of murder on the part of the son for the death of Ronald Opus.

Now comes the exquisite twist.

Further investigation revealed that the son was, in fact, Ronald Opus.  He had become increasingly despondent over the failure of his attempt to engineer his mother's murder.  This led him to jump off the ten-storey building on March 23rd, only to be killed by a shotgun blast passing through the ninth story window.  The son had actually murdered himself so the medical examiner closed the case as a suicide.

Dear friend,

History is about to happen!

Imagine a Canada where all identified child prngraphy websites are obliterated.  It is possible.  We have the technology.  We have the list of sites.   We have law enforcement officers across this land that would love to enforce such a law.

Unfortunately there simply isn't a law.  Not, yet.

The foundation for this dream is about to be laid.  Not in the upper echelons of the House of Commons in Ottawa, nor in a provincial legislature, but rather in a rural municipality in Ontario.

I believe that all good things begin on the home front, and this is no exception.

The Municipality of Huron-East stands ready to give third reading to a Bylaw that fights child prngraphy at the upcoming November 2nd council meeting.  The bylaw was first introduced back in June and is the first legal requirement in Canada that forces Internet service providers to block websites that contain illegal child prn images.

What a profound precedent this bylaw will set for other municipalities, provinces, and our nation!

Since we first told you about Mark Beaven's bylaw in July, it has been in the committee stage getting reworked for third reading.  In the meantime over one hundred of our volunteers have requested toolkits and are beginning to work at having a similar bylaw introduced into their own communities.  Go team!

Back in Huron East after many meetings the committee, which includes representatives from law enforcement and the local Internet Service Provider, was able to reach consensus on the wording of the final bylaw.

"I am extremely satisfied with the final wording of the bylaw," stated Mark Beaven.  "For the first time in Canada, Internet Service Providers will be legally required to assist Law Enforcement in the fight against Child Prn including blocking illegal websites.  I know of dozens of other municipalities across the country that are waiting for Huron-East to pass third reading.  Now that we are at that point, I truly hope that they follow our lead."

It is important that as many people as possible show up in support of this  bylaw at the November 2nd council meeting - both to encourage council and to  send a strong message to the nation through the media that will be on hand.

COME BE A PART OF HISTORY!

It is scheduled to take place at 7:00 pm at the Huron-East Council Chambers located in Seaforth, Ontario.  If you live in the area, please plan to attend and provide some NOISY, but polite, support.  If you have friends or family members in the area, please contact them, or forward this message along to invite them.

Thanks to all of you who sent 1-Click letters of support to Mark, and letters to other politicians and ISP's regarding ISP child prngraphy.  Your letters helped Mark generate support and helped prompt Bell Canada in July to donate $700,000 to www.Cyberaide.ca , a group dedicated to fighting child prngraphy on line.

Our momentum on this issue is growing.   We are in this battle with a determination to win.  We need your financial support to do this.

WAR ON PRNGRAPHY TIP OF THE WEEK

(Previous Tips # 1 "Crash and Tell,"  & #2 "Place Computer in an Open Supervised Area" are available in the footnotes.)

TIP #3  SHARE YOUR CHILD"S EMAIL ADDRESS.

It is exciting for children to have their own email address and receive mail.  However, with the amount of Prn SPAM bombarding cyberspace and the increasing numbers of predators shopping for their next victim on line, it is best to have a shared email address so that you can screen out any inappropriate e-mail and prevent the damage done by even one exposure.  For some people, one image is all it takes to become an addict.

In addition, make sure that your child knows that he should never give out identifying information such as his or her full name, phone number, address or school name.

VOLUNTEERS

1) ISP TOOKITS

Thanks to the hundreds of volunteers who have requested toolkits to implement an ISP bylaw in their communities.   You are wonderful!  We appreciate your dedication to educating and protecting your communities.  All the best as you get started!

If you would like a toolkit too, please write to info@unitedmothers.ca with "toolkit" in the subject line.

2) C.A.S.E. "RIBBON OF SIGNATURES" CAMPAIGN

Raise the Age of Consent from 14 to 18

Thanks to those of you who have volunteered!  Dolina Smith and her team at C.A.S.E. have mailed out hundreds of packages and thousands of metres of ribbon to volunteers across this country.   As a result, people are being educated about the link between child predation and the age of consent while thousands of signatures are being collected for presentation to MP's and the House of Commons.

If you would like to receive a Ribbon of Signatures' toolkit or more information, please contact C.A.S.E. to receive their very informative package: 4case@sprint.ca

IN THE NEWS

CANADIAN

1) House Arrest... Not Again!:  It looks like the judges still don't get it.  House arrest continues to be the order of the day in dealing with those who are responsible for the ever-increasing demand for child prngraphy and its corresponding increase in child abuse to supply the demand.

The Globe and Mail reported this month that a "former teaching assistant at Upper Canada College has been sentenced after pleading guilty to possessing child prngraphy."  He had worked with children as young as six and was co-supervisor of the after-school program.

"Ashley Chivers, 29 was given nine months of house arrest, a further conditional sentence of nine months and two years' probation.   He was charged after police seized home computers containing more than 6,000 prnographic images of children.  Mr. Chivers, who graduated from UCC in 1994, worked at the elite school for boys from 1995 until his arrest in June, 2003."

INTERNATIONAL NEWS

2) Detective Hurricane Ivan:  In a strange twist on the old adage that good can emerge from tragedy, Hurricane Ivan helped uncover a Maryland man's stash of child prngraphy .  Workers doing repairs on the house discovered the material and alerted police.  The collection of computer discs, videotapes and photographs filled 24 police boxes. Workers doing repairs on the house discovered the material and alerted police.  Robert Medvee, 52, has been charged with 48 counts of creating computer images of child pornography and 48 counts of possession of child pornography.  He remains jailed on $96,000 U.S. bail.

Friends, as we come together in our powerful online community and unite in our battle against prnography, I believe our homes, communities and nation will be strengthened.  Together we will be a hurricane-sized force in helping to eradicate this evil and its devastating effects upon individuals and our society.

PREVIOUS WAR ON PRNGRAPHY TIPS

TIP #1Crash & Tell.  Yes, I know you have been taught to carefully shut down your computer.  When it comes to prnography on the Internet, however, it is important to teach your children what an inappropriate image is and what to do if one pops up on the screen - immediately crash the computer by shutting off the computer’s power button and then tell your parents.  Why crash?  Prngraphy sites on the Internet interconnect with one another. (It is good for their business.) Thus, when you accidentally stumble across one site, if you merely click on the "x" in an attempt to close the screen, another prnography site will immediately "pop up".  On average you have to close 6 boxes before you free yourselves from their web!  The consequences to your child are catastrophic.  They will have been exposed to at least 6 possibly hard-core prnographic images that will forever be imprinted on their brains.  Many prnography addicts' problems began by accidentally stumbling across a site.  Don't let it happen to your family.  Teach them how to crash and tell!

TIP #2 Place Your Computer in an Open, Supervised Area of Your Home.

I had never really considered the importance of this until I delved into the prngraphy problem. Organizations and professionals that are dedicated to fighting this issue consistently share the same council   When the computer is in a public place, people are less likely to go to inappropriate sites, and if they do, they are more likely to get caught.  The privacy and secrecy afforded by placing your computer in a "quiet" corner of your house is a recipe for disaster.  Many spouses and youth have fallen prey to prngraphy addictions because of the secrecy factor.

As a result of this advice, our family recently relocated our family computer to the kitchen.  It is not that we have a love of listening to the hum and noise of the computer while we cook and clean, nor that we have a spacious kitchen.  It is just that prevention sure beats having to address the terrible consequences of exposure and addiction.

The kitchen is the most popular room in our home and happens to be where we spend a large portion of our day, so, it seemed like the logical choice for our family.  Consider the needs of your own family, and where the best location for the computer in your home should be.

I am surprised at the number of parents who allow their children to have computers in their bedrooms.  At the Impact America Conference in April 2000, conference delegates were told that any good boy or girl would fall if they had an Internet connection in their bedroom.  The teasers are that effective.

Strengthen the Family's Joann Hibbert Hamilton reported that she knew one mother who "unplugs the computer power cord and takes it with her when she goes to the store.  At night it is under her pillow.  She knows that no one in her home has accidental or purposeful access to prngraphy day or night."

"Dear children! This is a time of grace for the family and, therefore, I call you to renew prayer. May Jesus be in the heart of your family. In prayer, learn to love everything that is holy. Imitate the lives of saints so that they may be an incentive and teachers on the way of holiness. May every family become a witness of love in this world without prayer and peace. Thank you for having responded to my call."

From: Peter Sinn

Dear all, Peace of the Lord be with you.

It is with great joy that we announce the arrival of our little baby daughter, Bernice Marie Yik-Yiu Sinn . Bernice was born September 18, 2004. No, it isn't a typo. She was born more than a month ago. This belated announcement shows how "well" we are coping with the new addition to the family even with Peter on parental leave. We can certainly use more of your prayers :-P Please continue to keep us in your prayers as we keep you in ours.

As for the baby pool, the clear winner is Mary Ellen Yeldon. Mary Ellen, a parishioner at St. Maurice and a mother of 4 girls, correctly answered 5 out of 8 categories. I am also glad to say that no-one scores less than 10 points. Official result, with the 1st runner-up, will be posted shortly (definitely before Christmas ;-P) and the winners will receive their prizes.

We continue to ask for your prayers, especially for Bernice. May Our Lady, to whom we consecrate little Bernice, continue to safe guard Bernice in her journey to the Lord.

Regards, Peter, Vivian, Athanasius, Ignatius, Canice, Clarice & Bernice SINN

From:  Moira Matthews

I just received this, a very interesting argument, I thought!  Peace, Moira

So Be It! So if the Canadian government determines that it is against the law for the words "under God" to be on our money, then, so be it. And if that same government decides that the "Ten Commandments" are not to be used in or on a government installation, then, so be it. And since they already have prohibited any prayer in the schools, on which they deem their authority, then so be it. I say, "so be it," because I would like to be a law abiding Canadian citizen. I say, "so be it," because I would like to think that smarter people than I are in positions to make good decisions. I would like to think that those people have the Publics' best interests at heart. BUT, YOU KNOW WHAT ELSE I'D LIKE? Since we can't pray to God, can't Trust in God and cannot Post His Commandments in Government buildings, I don't believe the Government and it's employees should participate in the Easter and Christmas celebrations which honour the God that our government is eliminating from many facets of Canadian life. I'd like my mail delivered on Sunday, Christmas, Good Friday, Thanksgiving & Easter. After all, it's just another day. I'd like the Supreme Court to be in session on Christmas, Good Friday, Thanksgiving & Easter as well as Sundays. After all, it's just another day. I'd like the Senate or the Parliament to not have to worry about getting home for the "Christmas Break." After all ~ it's just another day. I'm thinking that a lot of my taxpayer dollars could be saved, if all government offices & services would work on Christmas, Good Friday & Easter. It shouldn't cost any overtime since those would be just like any other day of the week to a government that is trying to be "politically correct". In fact, I think that our government should work on Sundays (initially set aside for worshipping God...) because, after all, our government says that it should be just another day.... What do you all think???? If this idea gets to enough people, maybe our elected officials will stop giving in to the minority opinions and begin, once again, to represent the 'majority' of ALL of the Canadian people. SO BE IT........... Please Dear Lord, Give us the help needed to keep you in our country! 'Amen' and 'Amen'

Subject: Masses for Priests, Deacons and for Vocations to the Priesthood and the Diaconate

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

If you have previously received this message please note changes in the wording for the Mass offerings.

Yours in Christ,  Diane

The role of the Parish Priest has often been that of Father, Brother, Confidant, Psychiatrist, Marriage Counselor etc. to us.  They baptize us, administer the various Sacraments to us, and have been part of most of our lives almost from beginning to end.   Our Deacons have also been working hard to assist our Priests in carrying out the numerous duties that their positions require them to perform.  In addition, the worldwide shortage of priests is a pressing concern at this time. Locally, our Archbishop, Archbishop Marcel Gervais is spearheading the program to interest more young men in discerning a Vocation to the Priesthood.

With a view to showing our love and appreciation for the many sacrifices these men make on our behalf, we have formed a Group called 'Friends of the Clergy', whose goal is to offer Masses in the Archdiocese for the Priests and Deacons of our Parishes, and to pray for an increase in Vocations to the Priesthood and the Diaconate, beginning with the year 2005.  All that is required is a Co-coordinator for each Parish and twelve volunteers who would recruit parishioners to offer the Masses.  Groups such as the Knights of Columbus, CWL, Legion of Mary, Prayer Groups etc. could be approached with the idea.

As a Mass now costs $15, if three people contribute towards offering one Mass for one week of the year only, we would require a hundred and fifty six people to cover the fifty-two week period.  A 'blurb' that may be used by the Co-coordinator to get the word out to their Parishioners is given below.   In an effort to have things run as smoothly as possible, we are trying to 'twin' the Parishes.  If you are interested in being a Parish Co-coordinator, please email Diane @ diane@virtualministry.com to find out which Parish is being 'twinned' with your own.  I will also be keeping a Master List for each Parish.  As a Parish Co-coordinator you would have to ensure that receipts (simple ones - please see sample) are given to each contributor to avoid any confusion.  A list of all those who have offered Masses should be kept in case it is required.

Sample receipt:

Received from Joan Doe, the sum of $5 as part of an offering for a Mass for the Priests, Deacons (Seminarians) of our Parish, and for Vocations to the Priesthood.

Signed: John Black

Parish:

In His Homily at Seoul, Korea, October 7th, 1989, our Holy Father urged the Laity to "Pray for your Priests."  We hope that you will join us.  May God bless you.

 Sample Blurb:

'Friends of the Clergy' would like to offer Masses for the Priests and Deacons of our Parish and for Vocations to the Priesthood, each week, during the year 2005.  These Masses will be offered at .................................Parish.  To enable us to do this, we are asking interested parishioners to contribute $5.00 for the year.  As a Mass now costs $15, if three people offer Mass for one week, we would require a hundred and fifty six people to cover the fifty-two week period. The Mass offering will read like this: For (Name of your Parish) Clergy & for Clerical Vocations by ' Friends of the Clergy'.  If you are interested in joining us, or know someone who might be, please contact (name of your parish coordinator).  To ensure that we obtain these Masses for the year, we would like to pay for them as soon as possible.  Thank you, and may God bless you abundantly.
