STEM CELL RESEARCH

This is a meeting you won't want to miss!

The guest speaker is Dr. John Gay, an Endocrinologist, with a special
interest in bone metabolism, Chief of the Bone Metabolism Unit at the Civic
Campus of the Ottawa Hospital. Dr. Gay conducts a Physicians Ethics Group
for students of medicine. In June he addressed an inter-denominational
clergy group on the topic of Stem Cell Research and has spoken to Members of
Parliament on this topic.

The use of embryonic stem cells presents our society with serious
moral/ethical problems. Yet most of us feel inadequate to enter the debate
as the issue seems "beyond us". On the other hand the direction our society
goes is ultimately our responsibility. Drawing from sound social teaching of
the Catholic Church, combined with a proper understanding of science, Dr.
Gay can draw us out of this "vacuum of ignorance" and assist us to recognize
which areas of stem cell research must be rejected and which areas can be
morally supported.
